Downtown group to talk about safety

By Wil Day

Business and community leaders in downtown Wichita will be meeting Wednesday to talk about ways to continue the momentum from the recent NCAA basketball tournament.

The Downtown Neighborhood Association was created late in 2017 to continue to promote events and growth in the area, and carry over some lessons learned from the growth of Old Town.

Association president Jason Van Sickle said there are some ideas being discussed to enhance safety in the downtown area. He said there was good feedback from the strong police presence during the NCAA tournament, and he wants to see more officers working downtown. There are also discussions on community involvement with policing and outreach efforts, and Van Sickle said there is an idea for a neighborhood watch type of program, along with an Ambassadors program to help visitors to the downtown area.

A meeting is planned for 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Garvey Center. People who want to attend should go to the web site, click on the "Join" link, and send a message saying they would like to attend, and more information will be provided to them.
