Nonprofit to support Comcare holds promise

by Rhonda Holman

Sedgwick County’s idea to create a nonprofit organization to support Comcare could make the community mental health agency stronger, by giving it the ability to raise private funds and awareness and identify allies and partners. Developer Jason Van Sickle, who would be the new group’s chairman, showed at Wednesday’s County Commission meeting that he already has a keen understanding of Comcare’s crucial work and value. The commission’s talk last year about exploring options for privatization helped move Comcare toward establishing a nonprofit. And “we’re excited about it,” Comcare executive director Marilyn Cook told commissioners. Still, Wednesday’s discussion indicated some commissioners and Cook may have different ideas about Comcare’s future. For his part, County Commission Chairman Jim Howell emphasized: “We are trying to provide better services and maintain what we have.”
