Zoning change approved in Newton for Van Sickle apartment project

by Jeff Guy

The commission also voted to accept a recommendation by the Newton/North Newton Area Planning Commission for a change a zoning classification in property located at the southwest corner of West First Street and Boyd Avenue.

The area had been divided into many different parts. Under the new classification, one part will be zoned commercial, another as multi-family and another as light industrial.

Jason Van Sickle, who plans to build around 100 "high end" apartments on each of the three units he owns in "parcel 2," designated multi-family, said he would be willing to work with the city, which currently owns the land, in meeting "special assessment" water and sewer hook up costs. Van Sickle spoke enthusiastically about how the apartments will draw in businesses.
